Almondvale Centre Fun-draises For Marie Curie

Date: 12 Sep 2007

Marie Curie Cancer Care is benefiting from a cash donation thanks to Almondvale Shopping Centre’s pledge to raise money for the charity throughout the year.

Donations from shoppers visiting the mall during the year-long calendar of free monthly events in aid of Marie Curie have so far reached an impressive total of £3641.20.

The fundraising campaign to raise money for this year’s chosen charity kicked off with a 16-day Easter Extravaganza in March. Visitors were encouraged to offer donations when participating in the monthly events which also included the Livingston Flower Show in May, All Singing All Dancing weekend in June and a Harry Potter-themed Wizard Weekend in July and most recently, a Guinness World Record Face Painting last weekend in which the former record was smashed twice over.

Forthcoming events include a Celebration of Football in October, the Christmas Lights Switch-on with the Tweenies in November and a January Gold Rush next year.

Almondvale Shopping Centre Marketing Manager, Jennifer Bruce, said:  “Marie Curie Cancer Care does a tremendous job in the community and touches many people’s lives.  Unfortunately cancer is an illness which affects a great deal of people whether it be sufferers themselves, a member of their family, or a friend or colleague.

“We are delighted to have raised over £3,640 for this worthwhile cause after just six events and are eager to help the charity continue its fantastic work by raising even more over the coming year.”

Marie Curie Cancer Care is a free, high quality nursing service offered to those with terminal cancer. Patients can be treated in one of the 10 hospices nationwide or, as is increasingly common, they can be treated at home, surrounded by their families and loved ones.

It costs £160 for a night shift of a Marie Curie Nurse at the bedside of a patient at home and around £9,000 per day to run the Marie Curie Hospice in Edinburgh. It is anticipated that the contribution from Almondvale Shopping Centre will provide great benefit to the charity and its work in the local area.

Fiona Bushby, Community Fundraising Manager for Edinburgh and the Lothians, said:  “As a charity we rely heavily on the goodwill of organisations and individuals to ensure our work in the community continues.  We are absolutely delighted with the total raised so far and we’re very grateful to Almondvale Shopping Centre and its customers for their efforts.”
