Small changes make big differences in reducing environmental impacts
Date: 19 Feb 2010
The Centre, one of Scotland’s largest shopping centres, is encouraging customers to change their habits and become a little greener by hosting a ‘tip tree’ exhibition.
Starting on February 14th, The Centre, owned by Land Securities, is the first shopping centre in the UK to host the exhibition, of which, the main focus is a 3m tree shaped stand full of practical hints and tips that can help make people aware of how a small change in their habits can make a big difference in reducing total environmental impacts.
The tree features thirteen environmental tips and facts which cover food wastage, water savings, energy reduction and recycling. It is hoped that the ‘tip tree’ will raise awareness of the extent society impacts on the environment and what we can do as individuals to help bring about reductions.
Sarah Beattie, Environment Manager for Land Securities’ Retail portfolio, commented on the project:
“Land Securities has set a target to raise awareness amongst its shoppers on environmental issues by 10%. Changing behaviours is one of the biggest drivers in addressing environmental issues as it is often easy to implement and obviously has a huge impact if everyone gets involved.”
Jennifer Bruce, Marketing Manager at The Centre added: “We are always looking to provide a good experience for visitors to our centres and it’s not just about shopping. We want our customers to have access to information that is relevant to their lives and that helps to make our community a better place to live. This exhibition is a practical way to help everyone understand more about the environment.”
The public ‘tip tree’ exhibition coincides with the launch of other sustainability measures at The Centre to help retailers become even greener. Initiatives include Freddie Frog water savers for toilets and the envirowheel – a guide to ways retailers can save energy and money.
The ‘tip tree’ which will go on display at seven of Land Securities’ largest shopping centres across the UK, was designed by 442 Design in Edinburgh using environmentally friendly products.
