Livingston's Big Read
Date of Event: 24/04/2008 - 27/04/2008
‘The more you read the more you know’ - that’s the ethos of the National Year of Reading 2008 and one that Almondvale Shopping Centre has adopted as it prepares for Livingston’s ‘Big Read’ event set to take place at the end of this month.
As well as an extra special appearance from Paddington Bear – to mark his 50th anniversary – a host of interactive events will take place around a specially erected tepee in the centre of the shopping mall aimed to encourage children to read more.
Over the four-day event (Thursday 24th – Sunday 27th April), story-tellers, authors and illustrators will be coming together to bring some of the country’s favorite storybooks to life.
Sally Collins, illustrator of ‘Hamish McHaggis’ is just one participant of the event and will be attending on the Sunday to show how she has created the lovable character.
The event, which supports the National Year of Reading 2008, will also include a storybook themed fancy dress competition and face painting, transforming shoppers into their favourite story book characters.
A series of pre-school story telling sessions – in association with West Lothian Libraries - will take place in the giant tepee over the Thursday and Friday and will include a selection of the children’s favourite stories of the moment.
With support from Scottish Book Trust, the event also has a selection of favourite titles to award to special participants and Eric Pullen – author of the Why books – will also be donating a selection of his books to give away.
Paddington Bear books will also be up for grabs to prepare readers for the new special edition book which will be released in June of this year – to mark the 50th Anniversary.
A historical display and some books relating to the local history will also be presented by the West Lothian Library Service giving visitors an opportunity to view a rare photographic display of the area of Fauldhouse along with the opportunity to purchase a piece of the town’s history through a range of exclusive local history publications.
